Feeling hot, hot, hot!!!

We left Memphis on Wednesday at 4:30 am and made it to Amarillo, Texas by 5:00 p.m. Jeff managed to put over 200 miles behind us before the kids even woke up. I drove the last 375 miles of our 755 mile run to give him a chance to rest.

We splashed around in the pool at the Oasis RV Resort and got some needed rest to gear up for Thursday’s trip to Palo Duro Canyon.

Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon in the United States (We will be heading to the first in a week or so).

While at the visitor’s center we met local author, Gerald McCathern.  McCathern writes historical fiction books that are set in Texas and specifically Palo Duro Canyon. He signed a copy of his first book, Horns, for Meghan. If she or Jeff finish it before the trip’s end, we may have to include a review on the blog!

After the visitor’s center we spent over two hours hiking in the canyon. It was truly a magnificent sight to see.

It started to get pretty hot towards midday, and we cut short the hike because of the heat. When we reached the car, we saw a thermometer posted and it was 106 degrees in the shade/112 in the sun-time to head back to the pool.

  3. These posts are great! I am happy to see that you are having such a great time on your trip so far. Stay cool in Texas!

  4. Sounds like you guys are having a fabulous time already. Pictures are great. Glad Colin found his hat. Was worried that he would continue his journey without a great one. Tell him he looks awesome in it. Heading out tomorrow. Miss you guys.

  5. Hello, Hearys!!

Looks like you guys are having a wonderful time. My family (Laurie) did a similar trip the year I graduated from high school, but we did it in 3 weeks – a real whirlwind trip!

We are headed off to Catholic Familyland tomorrow, but we will sign up for the email posts so we can continue to watch your progress.

    Love to all!
    The Stauffers!

  6. Wow! all the way to Texas already – tell the truth, is 112 a dry heat so it doesn’t feel as hot as here at 89 degrees? you keep up this hiking in the heat and Meghan will have the best tan ever, Maura will be a white blond and Colin will have the strongest legs in middle school! love the pictures and am looking forward to fireworks pictures on the 4th from somewhere out west – take care and watch out for snakes – Love Mom

    1. Hey Mom, Yes, the saying “it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity” is absolutely true. It was hot, but not oppressive the way it is in PA. We will be in Durango, CO for fireworks. Hopefully they will have them. There has been a drought here in Texas for months, so they aren’t allowing any fireworks, not sure about Colorado. Look for postcards coming your way. Love from all:)

  7. I hope postcards are coming Nate’s way, too 🙂 Have fun in CO and we LOVE reading your posts!!
