Our last day in San Francisco started early for Jeff and Colin. They went out to do some surf fishing off of a nearby pier. While they had a bite or two, they didn’t manage to catch anything, but had fun nonetheless.
We packed a picnic lunch and got ready to head out. After returning from fishing, Jeff had left the lights on in the “blue bomber” and the battery was dead. No worries, the kids pushed it out in front of the motorhome and we gave it a jump.
Our plan for the afternoon was to visit Muir Woods National Park. Muir Woods, named for explorer and naturalist John Muir, is one of our countries oldest national parks and is home to one of the last areas of “old growth” redwoods on the planet. We walked through the groves of redwoods and took pictures. It was cool and peaceful. The kids enjoyed standing in the trees that had been hollowed out by years of fires.
After we were done wandering the woods, we drove a few miles to Muir Beach to have our picnic. We sat on the beach and watched the kids explore. There were towering rock formations dotting the coast and the kids were delighted to find scallops, starfish and sea urchins attached to the rocks. The beach was almost empty and it was like having our own private aquarium. The kids enjoyed touching the sea life and seeing them up close. It was a nice peaceful way and to end our busy 4 days in San Francisco. We were truly sad to think we’d be heading east in the morning.
We were up before the sun to make the long trek to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. We were making good time on Rt. 80 through Nevada until Jeff felt an unfamiliar shaking in the wheel. We pulled over to the side of the road and found our culprit – we’d blown a right rear outer tire. We were fortunate to be only 5 miles past the town of Winnemucca. We called several places before we found the Winnemucca Tire Factory who sent out a technician and we were back on the road in under 90 minutes – kudos to the Winnemucca Tire Factory!
We made a stop in Utah to have the other tires replaced as well. We had discussed doing this with our mechanic before we left and he didn’t think it necessary, but after having to sit on the roadside, we decided we’d rather just take care of it now. We trekked another 150 miles before bedding down in a rest stop overnight.
I woke up at 6 a.m. and took my turn in the driver’s seat making the final 300 plus miles to Jackson Hole Campground and it’s magnificent view of the Tetons. More on that later!

You have 4 great days in San Fran. I feel so boring this summer….ha-ha! Can’t wait to hear about the Tetons!! Glad you are safe and riding on new tires. Love you!
Hi – well, these are not the kind of adventures you want, batteries and tires, but glad you were able to take care of them in rather short order – I love the fishing in coats, don’t have to worry about sunscreen on “the coast” I guess – well, don’t be too sad about heading east, you still have lots to see and experience and then when you get back, some of you still have two vacations to go, the “mountains” of the Pocono’s and the “sand dunes” of Brigantine!!! so, keep on trucking and love you all, be safe – Love Mom
Yahoo. New tires and batteries. One never knows what to expect when traveling 7000 miles (to and from home). Glad it turned out ok. I know you’ll have just as much fun on the ride home as you had going out. How about that Pacific Ocean? Cold, huh? I stuck my piggies in in the WA state area. Burrrrrr….Love you guys…..
I remember touring around San Francisco with my family – so much fun! Sounds like you had a great time. That last day sounds REALLY enjoyable – I love the beach pictures. You are inspiring me to get a little creative for next year’s vacation…!
