No "kicks" on Route 66

We started our last day in Texas with an early hike around the rim of Palo Duro Canyon. This 3 mile trail was amazing and we got so many great pictures, we can’t even post them all. It was much cooler and the panhandle has a constant wind so it was a nice way to start the day.

We channeled our inner artist with a trip to Cadillac Ranch. This is something you have to see to believe. Out in the middle of a field are 10 real Cadillac cars buried nose down in the Texas clay. People stop by all day long with spray paint cans and “decorate” the cars. There are layers and layers of paint. The funniest thing about it is that your artwork doesn’t last that long.ย  The posting that Meghan is standing next to was covered by a Texas flag by the time we left!ย  The kids, Jeff and I had fun decorating anyway.

As promised, I am here going to mention an “ugly”-We saw a brochure for the “Route 66” shopping district and thought that would be a fun way to spend the afternoon and pick up some Amarillo souvenirs. Well, I’m not sure if it’s because of the depressed economy down here or what, but it was very disappointing. The shops were old junk shops posing as “antiques” stores and the neighborhood was questionable.ย  We can say we drove the historic route, but we ended up going to Walmart and then Olive Garden for a bite.

(Please note – too ugly for pictures.)

We ended the day back at Palo Duro Canyon in their outdoor amphitheater for a musical called “Texas”ย  Set against the backdrop of the canyon, this show kept even Colin entertained.

It told of the settling of the panhandle and Palo Duro Canyon. There were live horses and lightning strikes and lots of great music. At the end, they did a Fourth of July tribute to service men.ย  They brought out the flag for each service branch and had anyone who served stand. The kids were very proud to see their father among the men who stood. Unfortunately, because of drought conditions, there were no fireworks, however, they did a nice job with a lights and water spectacular. On the way out, the kids got pictures with the 8 main characters.

All in all, we are leaving Texas having completely enjoyed this state’s hospitality. Now ya’ll, on to Colorado!

  2. I have my doubts that Colin was standing in front of the real Elvis! (although you might have a sighting in CO). Jeff, did you spot the old Cadillac of mine that you drove to the prom? To say the kids will be worldly after this trip is an understatement. I think you are setting a good foundation for Meghan’s political career. TX was interesting, and from your preview of CO, looks like some cool and pretty scenery ahead. Godspeed! Dad

  3. Hey! my grandkids seem awfully close to the edge of those big pointy rocks!!!! glad to hear some culture is seeping in with the musical “Texas” – I hear a lot of the southwest is in drought conditions so not many places will have fireworks, but seeing the canyons will be spectacle enough I am sure – Dad was wondering if our old grey caddie was one of those in the desert? I see Maura spraying her heart out there – I am copying these blogs and sending them down to the Greats in Florida so she will be up to date on your trip when she sees yow’al – Happy 4th on the 3rd from the eastern relations!Love Mom

  4. Love hearing about the Heary adventures. We are having a great time ourselves in Niagara. Great campground. Maybe one day, when we grow up, we’ll be able to do an adventure like the Heary’s. Keep the pics coming. I love seeing the places you are going. Love, The Fishers (P.S. Hi, Maura from Jules)

  6. Loving all the posts!! So glad you are all having a great time. Keep the adventures coming. Love the cadillacs and love the hats!! ๐Ÿ™‚ We just bought our pop-up this weekend, so it is great to get inspiration for trips (although cross country in a pop may not be feesible!) ๐Ÿ™‚ Safe travels as you enter week 2 of your adventures.
