Grand Canyon – On the Edge

We left Durango bright and early before the kids woke up to get to our next stop, The North Rim of The Grand Canyon. Meghan, however, had a mini stop planned that she had to see. We stopped to see Four Corners, the only place in the United States where you can stand in four states (Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico) at the same time.

Surrounding the monument are stands selling Indian pottery, jewelry and crafts. We spent about 45 minutes taking pictures and buying souvenirs before we got back on the road again.

The drive from Durango to Jacob’s Lake, Arizona was truly one of the most interesting we have had to date. Pictures do not do justice to the amazing colors and textures of the landscape. We were in awe of the magnificence of it all as well as looking forward to seeing what the Grand Canyon had to offer.

We arrived at Kaibab Camper Village around dinner time and settled in for an early night. We wanted to get to the canyon early to get some hiking in before it got too hot.

Thursday morning was beautiful, cool and sunny as we set out for the canyon. We started with the North Kaibab hiking trail, a 28 mile round trip that descends almost 6000 feet into the canyon. There are signs posted telling you not to try and hike this whole trail in one day as it takes you twice as long to return as to go out. We hiked for about 3 ½ hours and then found a picnic area on the rim for lunch.

Clouds started to roll in as we visited the points along the rim of the canyon-Bright Angel Point, Cape Royal, Roosevelt Point and Walhalla Overlook. The views here were breathtaking and we watched as the storm rolled in over the cliffs. P7070234  P7070232P7070223

Donning our rain ponchos we continued to check out the sights until we decided we were ready to head home for dinner.

As we left the park, we saw a herd of bison on the side of the road. We hopped out of the car and took lots of pictures.

The kids enjoyed watching them frolic (yes, bison do actually frolic!) in the field.

We were happy to have included the Grand Canyon in our itinerary and would absolutely recommend it as a must-see stop. Next stop-VEGAS BABY!!!

  1. At last… 4 corners… good call, Meghan! Dan has been asking when you were getting there. We had to go to the Elmwood Zoo to see bison and they were NOT frolicing! What a neat sight to see. Can’t wait to hear about Vegas!

  2. Great pictures from Durango! I talked to Joe and he told me about the puppy. The pics of the Buffalo and the Canyon are wonderful. Now, if you are very lucky, you will be able to pay for the whole trip with your winnings at Vegas.
