Leaving Las Vegas (early)

When we left the Grand Canyon for Las Vegas, we decided with the miles we’d put behind us, it was time for a pit stop. We stopped in Hurricane, Utah for an oil and filter change and to stock up on food and supplies at the local Wal-Mart.  We arrived in Las Vegas late afternoon and along with us, the thunderstorms that are a daily occurrence in this area.

After the rain and some dinner, we spent our first evening in Vegas walking the strip. We stepped into a casino to show the kids what gambling was all about. I played $10.00 in the slot machines and walked away with $6.25-did I mention I’m not much of a gambler!  We watched the Treasure Island Casino’s show “Siren’s Song”- an outdoor pirate-themed extravaganza with music, dancing and pyrotechnics.

We headed back around midnight to the KOA Circus, Circus campground.

Saturday morning, Meghan and I were up early to head out on a bus trip to the Las Vegas Outlets in Primm, Nevada.  After a frantic run through the MGM Grand Casino to find our tour bus stop, we spent the morning shopping at stores like Coach, Juicy Couture and Hollister.

Meghan was in heaven and I was happy to be out of the heat.  Jeff, Colin and Maura spent the morning cooling off in the campground’s pool.

Jeff set up our evening entertainment-The Blue Man group at the Venetian.  After the rain stopped we again headed to the strip, to pick up our tickets and see the show.  Let’s just say the evening didn’t turn out as we’d planned. Jeff had procured first row seats in what is known as the “poncho” section. Ponchos are placed on each chair because during the course of the show, The Blue Men can toss any number of items on their audience-paint, Captain Crunch, mashed bananas-etc.

Anyone who has seen The Blue Man group knows they are a bit creepy looking. The kids were very excited but a little nervous about being in the front row, as The Blue Men like to interact with their audience.  Once the show began,  Meghan had what can only be described as an anxiety attack. Jeff took her out shaking and in tears.  Colin, Maura and I remained, but I honestly couldn’t enjoy the show and had no cell service to contact Jeff.  Meghan & Jeff remained in the hall for the entire show.  At one point, one of the Blue Men crossed through the hall by them and Meghan let out a “horror movie worthy” scream, startling the Blue Man probably more than he scared her.

Maura and Colin enjoyed the show and left covered in mashed bananas, which when dried, are very difficult to get out of your hair!  We returned to the camper after midnight, exhausted.

We’d planned to visit Hoover Dam on Sunday and spend one more night in Las Vegas, however, the heat was stifling, the internet service at the campground had been down for two days and truthfully, we were a pretty “done” with Vegas, so we headed out and added Yosemite to our itinerary instead.  The lights of Las Vegas were something to see and The Blue Man group would have been entertaining under different circumstances.  Overall, not our favorite stop, but an adventure none the less!

  1. Wow! what can I say? we have been a bit harried here at the “old” Heary homestead, so haven’t caught up with your blogs since Friday, this was like an adventure story reading 3 or 4 at one time! Starting with the end, Meghan showed good sense in screaming like a banchee at blue people who throw rotton bananas at you and in picking shopping at an outlet – I am glad you all got to the 4 corners spot in the U.S. of A., I had never heard of it and am glad to see it – and going back in time, I am sure I would never have been able to climb even 1/4 of the way up the sand dune – I am very impressed with Jeff and Colin getting to the top! (equally impressed with the girls 3/4 of the way up! – just remember, no climbing sand dunes in Brigantine! I will have all of these new ones to send to Beverly Hills to entertain the greats – hope you are heading for cooler climates, although it is supposed to be 98 here tomorrow – take care, love you all, Mom

  2. heyy meghan!! It’s Cassie and Elizabeth! We hope you and your family are having an awesome time on your trip! We miss you and can’t wait ’til you come home!!! (in 3 weeks….) HAVE FUN!!! 🙂

  3. Hey, Sorry that the Blue Man Group was kind of a bust. Oh well. Heard they can be off the wall. Nice try though. Neither I nor Scott have any desire to be in Vegas. Not one of our particular hot spots. But, like you, we don’t gamble. So that puts a kybosh on Vegas. Anyway, glad to hear that flexibility is still the number one priority. Hope Yosemite brings more smiles than tears. Much love, Elaine

  4. Meg – I have to tell you that I seriously would have paid money to hear your scream when the blue man walked by – everytime I think of it, it makes me laugh – you are one special kid! Love Grandmom
