Cool Mountain Air and Really BIG Trees

We left Las Vegas around lunchtime and reached the High Sierra RV Park in Oakhurst, California around dusk. It was refreshing to feel the cool, mountain air and we slept with the windows open for the first time in our trip.

The following morning, Jeff and Colin spent some time fishing in the stream that bordered our campground, while the girls and I caught up on our reading and relaxing.

We spent the afternoon visiting Yosemite National park where we took the tram tour around the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. The trees were huge and magnificent. We were given headsets that explained the history of the area and the sequoias themselves. Maura, our resident goofball, listened to the whole tour (approximately 90 minutes) in Spanish and when we said how interesting the information had been and even a bit educational, announced proudly that she’d learned nothing!

We topped day off with a picnic lunch by the Merced River in Yosemite. The kids hopped from boulder to boulder at the water’s edge looking for lizards and Colin was “panning for gold” but had no luck.

We returned to campsite for a campfire and dinner of spaghetti & meatballs that had simmered all day in the crockpot. Yosemite was beautiful and although we didn’t see all it had to offer, we enjoyed our time there immensely. Now to dip our toes in the Pacific-San Francisco here we come!

  1. Wow! Those are some big trees! 🙂 Glad to know that cowboy hats are back in style! Haha Maura, we all laughed out loud when we read about the Spanish tape! 🙂 Have a safe trip to California! (Meghan’s promised land as Jessica has been calling it) 🙂

  2. Love, love, love the picture of your family and the three kids together! How are you ever going to create a Christmas card with all of these choices?? Maybe one picture from every state you visited? Your day sounded relaxing and peaceful. Enjoy San Fran! I can’t wait to hear how the Pacific Ocean compares to the Atlantic.

  3. Well, I just love the words cool and refreshing and I am sure you are all happy for the change from hot and dusty – glad you got to see the Sequoias as they are not to be believed! now, off to the “piece de resistance” of the trip, San Francisco! I know I said (at least 100 x’s) how much I loved riding the cable cars, so think of me as you clang up and down the hills! Colin, are you going to try to ride the waves in the pacific? and Maura, now that you have conquered Spanish, Chinese is the language of choice in San Fran – and Jeff and Molly, keep my kiddies safe from all the libs out there – Meghan, I know you have been looking forward to this part of the trip the most, so dig in and enjoy every minute of it – make my next postcard a picture of you guys on the trolley – take care and have a great weekend on the coast! Love Grandmom

  4. Wow!! How gorgeous!! Nice close-up pic of the kids. Sounds like so much fun and I am soooooo jealous right now! Thanks for sharing your trip with us – can’t wait for the next installment!

  5. Ok, Maura, really….If Jules was with you, she’d be doing the same thing. Oh, well. Did you learn any Spanish while you were listening? Yosemite looks fabulous. Glad you had a day of relaxation. Camping can be very hectic (but fun). Can’t wait to hear about San Fran. (And, Jeff, your mom is right…be careful of the libs….they’re everywhere…)

  6. Your trip looks AMAZING!!!!! We love the gianormous trees and laughed out loud that Maura listened to the tour in Spanish!
