We arrived at Custer/Mount Rushmore KOA in South Dakota early afternoon on Sunday, July 24th. The kids were very excited because this campground had both a swimming pool and a bounce pillow. We spent the afternoon bouncing and swimming.
Monday morning we took the RV to Leo’s Auto in Custer because we had a faulty valve stem on one of our new tires. While they took care of that, we all had a hearty breakfast in an adorable western themed diner.
When our RV was finished being serviced, we took the kids to see Mt. Rushmore. The kids enjoyed seeing the Monument and we took lots of pictures.
After looking around for a while and visiting the gift shop, we headed out to have some lunch.
After lunch we visited Wind Cave National Park to do some spelunking. Wind Cave National Park has a labyrinth of underground caves that are well known for their outstanding display of boxwork, an unusual cave formation composed of thin calcite fins resembling honeycombs. We did a mile and half underground tour of the caves that took us through several different levels. The rock formations were beautiful and incredible and it was a cool 54 degrees – perfect for getting of the heat.
We all enjoyed the tour immensely and headed back to the campground to relax. While I got groceries for dinner and picked up pizza, the kids jumped on the bounce pillow and swam in the pool. We made some friends at the pool and ended up sitting by the fire with them in the evening.
We decided to leave at the crack of dawn the following morning to make the 800+ mile trip to Rock Island, Illinois, our last stop before we head home. It’s hard to believe that in less than a week, we’ll be home and this adventure will come to an end.

Can’t believe your time is almost up! What an awesome thing to bounce on a huge pillow….oh, and uh, the presidents thing and the cave were cool too. 🙂 We’ll start camping out on your doorstep in about 2 days so we’re sure not to miss your arrival home.
Blessings!

Sounds like you are having lots of fun. The Western U.S. has much appeal to anyone who visits, thus the population shift to the West. Keep rolling East, and we can get together when you return to tell us about the great trip.
P.S. Have they started construction yet on the 5th face at Rushmore (you know who)
Mom & Dad
WOW….800 MILES….YIKES. My kids would never make it. Pictures, of course, are way cool. Was showing them around work the other day. I love Gerri’s comment about the 5th face 😉 Can’t wait to see you guys next week. Have a great remainder of your trip. (By the By—Can totally tell, Molly, that you were a journalism major in college. The descriptions are fantabulous…..)
What a great trip! I have passed your emails on to Cousin Janice – we both agree it is a trip that is making life long memories!
Ok, did you all spend more time bouncing or looking at the dead presidents? and…how come you adventurers did not climp up or down on them? you have climbed up moutains and sand hills, climbed down canyons and to the Pacific ocean, walked through redwoods and prisions, so it is only fitting you would end the western trek by exploring caves! what a great trip and I am looking forward to all the pictures down the shore! I think you are in luck with Illinois as you know who will not be in the state, so you should breeze through it – safe journey and enjoy the next few days – they will be bittersweet, so many of us can’t wait to see you, but enjoy the remaining states! Love Mom
Wonderful trip with excellent descriptions by Molly. Don’t stop at Notre Dame!
Passing thru Indiana now. Won’t stop:)
That is a great shot of Mount Rushmore. It is hard to believe that you are heading back East. It seems like yesterday when this great journey began. Safe travels!
